There is a great story on NPR today about the history of business casual and specifically Casual Fridays. During the recession of the 80s Casual Fridays were an inexpensive perk strapped companies could offer employees. Problem was, executives were nervous a lax dress code would make for lax employees.
Like any smart marketer, Levi seized on the opportunity by creating a guide to dressing casual in the business place and sending it to hundreds of HR departments across the country. No only did it ease concerns about allowing employees to wear casual clothing, it ushered a new era for the dreaded Hawaiian shirt.
